Grade 5 and 6 teachers, have you picked up your 3 Grade 5 and 6 teachers, have you picked up your 3 week math talk freebie? We finally started yesterday (better late than never). This procedural fluency review question generated great discussion about what each type of measurement looked like. I would have loved to include a video of what some students were doing to help others understand. I had one kiddo attempting to cut masking tape to the width of a millimetre to show her group. We also did the Tuesday question reviewing patterns. It was great formative assessment for me that students understood what growing and shrinking patterns were but didn’t know what a table of values was. Man I love this routine! What a perfect way to get the basic concepts reviewed before the unit has even begun! Now that we are finally ready for these spiralled review/ problem solving prompts, I am so excited to see what other conversations these prompts will spark. Have you ever watched a student trying to keep up Have you ever watched a student trying to keep up with taking notes while you are teaching a math lesson? Just like my adorable Kacey here, their tongues are out in concentration and they are scrambling a mile a minute to try to get every word down. I remember trying to explain that they didn’t need to copy every word, but I was wasting my breath because having it all on their paper felt good for them. That got me thinking….how can I provide my students with a copy of the lesson, giving them access to them anytime they want? That’s where the idea of digital math lessons for in-person learning was born. Digital lessons keep students attention on collaborative discussion throughout our lessons, rather than spending the whole period on notes. This was a game changer!
